Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections for Hair Restoration
Why PRP Therapy for Hair Loss?
Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy for hair loss involves a three-step medical treatment that utilizes the patient’s own blood to concentrate plasma cells that are injected into the scalp.
The medical community has found that PRP injections stimulate hair follicles by increasing the blood supply making the hair shaft thicker and more productive. The therapy can be combined with medications and other hair loss procedures to improve results.
PRP therapy is a natural approach that has been used for nearly 40 years to treat various types of conditions. When used for hair loss, patients are able to regrow their natural hair without dangerous scalp surgeries or chemicals.
How Does PRP Therapy Work?
PRP therapy is performed in a three-step process to be completed in sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are necessary for full results and are to be scheduled every 4–6 months.
The three-step process is as follows:
The patient’s blood is drawn and placed into a centrifuge that spins rapidly to separate plasma cells from the rest of the blood. It is a fairly quick process that is performed the same day as the injections.
In approximately 10 minutes, the centrifuge achieves separation of fluids in the blood and divides the blood into three layers:
- Platelet-Rich Plasma
- Platelet-Poor Plasma
- Red Blood Cells
Once the plasma cells are separated from the blood, it is drawn into a syringe and injected into the scalp focusing on the areas where hair growth is needed the most. The patient should not feel any discomfort and the session is completed fairly quickly depending on the size of the area being treated.
What to Expect from Therapy
When you start your PRP hair restoration therapy, the doctor will assess your condition and prescribe a customized treatment plan. For most patients, six sessions are recommended, with noticeable improvement after only 3-4 treatments.
You can expect each session to last approximately 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the area affected. As part of the therapy, the patient is recommended to take warm showers following the sessions to increase circulation in the scalp.
Am I a Good Candidate for Hair Restoration Using PRP Injections?
It is best to start PPR therapy for hair restoration as soon as you notice signs of hair loss. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the more difficult it will be to restore your hair. However, even if you have experienced hair loss for a long time, you are still a good candidate for the therapy.
