Leaky Gut

Leaky Gut

Leaky Gut is a term first coined by non-traditional medicine years ago and it was not until late 2014 that traditional medicine started recognizing it as a real problem. Basically, Leaky Gut exists when the lining cells of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) separate allowing content of the GI system to enter the body between the separated cells.  Once these digested particles get between the cells and into the body they are recognized as foreign and are attacked by natural killer white blood cells and antibodies.  Once this occurs, the intestinal tract becomes microscopically inflamed and can result in decreased nutrient absorption.  Many believe that this is the root of many autoimmune diseases.  Many believe that many autoimmune diseases originate from the gut. There are many who feel and more research is proving that this process can also result in many autoimmune conditions.  As you can imagine, this can result in a conglomerate of conditions ranging from food allergies to malnutrition (nutrient deficiencies).  Commonly people can complain of fatigue, autoimmune diseases, gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea/constipation, weight gain, decrease mood, cravings (especially bread, sugar, salt) and intolerance to certain foods.  These people frequently have positive allergy tests to many foods. Correction of this problem utilizes a multiple protocol approach.  Often non-traditional FDA approved testing is utilized to help identify and to direct treatment.  Leaky Gut is often treatable and the underlying problem can be...

Chelation Therapy

Chelation Therapy

Chelation Therapy Chelation Therapy has been used for many years to treat heavy metal toxicity and is still used today for this purpose by traditional and not traditional medicine.  Non-traditional medicine also uses Chelation Therapy to treat coronary arterial disease guided by the recent 9 year study (2003-2012) and sponsored by the National Institute of Health, a randomized placebo controlled study. This recent study revealed the efficacy by chelation therapy in stabilizing arterial plaque in most, but especially in diabetics.  Results showed that chelation therapy was more beneficial than any other traditionally accepted treatment regimen to date including medications and arterial stenting at preventing cardiac events such as;  deaths,  heart attacks,  strokes,  hospitalizations for heart problems, and need for cardiovascular surgery.  Chelation has shown to be safe and without any serious side effects as compared with other treatment protocols. Non-traditional medicine utilizes chelation therapy to treat heavy metal burden or over exposure before it gets to the point of being toxic.  Some feel that people develop symptoms from heavy metal over exposure well before it gets elevated to the point of being classified as toxic.  At Anti Aging & Functional Medicine, we will perform testing to determine if you would be a good candidate for chelation...

Hair Loss Alopecia

Hair Loss Alopecia

There is exciting news concerning new techniques and technology in hair restoration for the treatment of male and female pattern baldness called alopecia. Hair loss Alopecia is a condition with different causes, but the most common form is male and female pattern hair loss alopecia. This occurs when the scalp follicles are exposed to certain hormones such as dihydroxytestosterone, also known as DHT. If you are genetically programmed to undergo alopecia, at a certain age, your scalp follicles in certain areas of your scalp will atrophy or deteriorate resulting in hair loss. There are many treatments for alopecia such as hair transplantation, wigs, weaves, Propecia, Rogaine, LASER light treatment, and topical solutions. The gold standard for male and female pattern alopecia is hair transplantation. Compared to hair transplantation, all other forms of hair restoration are much less effective, at least as expensive and much more time consuming. Once the hair transplantation process is completed, patients never have to think about or treat hair loss again. Compared to other surgical procedures, hair transplantation is relatively safe. The transplanted follicles, sweat glands and oil glands are living tissue. If hair is pulled out, new hair will grow in behind it. Transplanted hair grows for life and grays naturally with the rest of the hair requiring no special care. There have been many important and significant improvements in hair transplantation. If it is done properly, it will be virtually undetectable and will appear completely natural. Follicular unit transplantation is now used by the leading hair transplant surgeons. Hair shafts exit the scalp in groups called follicular units. The number of hairs in each follicular unit ranges from 1-5 hairs. Donor tissue from the scalp is harvested from alopecia resistant areas, from the back and sides. With the use of stereomicroscopes, the follicular units are isolated, producing ultra-fine follicular grafts about 0.5 millimeters in diameter. The older technique resulted in grafts about 1.5 millimeters in diameter. Smaller grafts appear more natural and waste less tissue. The final result of transplanted hair takes 6-12 months and is a relatively inconspicuous process compared to wigs and weaves. Utilization of the smallest grafts is known as ultra fine follicular unit hair transplantations, which are virtually undetectable and appear completely natural. In fact, many people you see have had hair transplantations but they go completely unnoticed. I have been told many times that the hair dressers of my patients cannot tell that they have had hair transplantation even after examination. There have been other innovations with hair transplantation. The anesthetic process results in a nearly pain-free surgery and recovery. Five years ago, the average hair transplant session was about 700 grafts or less, but with advanced techniques and technology, sessions now average 2,000 grafts. This means that the restoration process can be accomplished with fewer sessions, many times requiring only one session. There are many things to look for in choosing a qualified hair transplant physician. Make sure that the doctor has many years of experience. The board certified doctor should have an appealing before and after picture gallery and prior patients who are willing to talk or meet with you. It is an absolute must that the procedure is performed using experienced hair transplant technicians employing the follicular unit technique using stereomicroscopes. The physician should be a local doctor with ownership in the practice and should be available after the procedure if you have any questions or difficulties. The doctor should be present every step of the way from consultation to completion. The transplant procedure should use single hair grafts in the hairline that provide a...

Doctor Assisted Weight Loss

Doctor Assisted Weight Loss

Doctor Assisted Weight Loss Our doctor assisted weight loss focuses is on System Optimization so that you can lose weight AND be at your best.  Anti Aging & Functional Medicine does NOT focus on the traditional method of “calories in/calories out”. A History of Weight Loss and Learning Dr. Zacco comes from a family that obesity knows all too well. His mother was on “To Tell The Truth”, a nationally syndicated game show in the 1970’s as the first person in the United States to have her mouth wired shut to lose weight. “She had tried every weight loss plan available that eventually failed so she was willing to try anything by then,” Dr. Zacco explains.  After years of yo yo dieting, Dr. Zacco’s sister has also lost 120 lbs and has successfully kept it off. SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION Dr. Zacco noticed that when many of his patients followed the System Optimization program, excessive weight would be lost. Their cravings would diminish and energy increases enough to start an exercise program outlined for them. At Anti Aging and Functional Medicine  we believe strongly in a lifestyle that promotes a more healthy weight and a fuller life by renewing your energy level. Optimizing your body (hormones, brain, gut, immune system, nervous system, cardiovascular system) restores your energy and desire to exercise daily and eat more nutritionally. Many times we have metabolic anomalies that stack the deck against us making it nearly impossible to lose weight. Things like adrenal fatigue, under functioning thyroid gland, gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances, hormonal imbalances, etc. are not discovered or treated prior to dieting.  This results in inability to lose weight or gaining back the weight lost known in yo yo dieting.  If your cravings are diminished, chances are you will be more successful in your dieting endeavors. These issues need to be addressed to make the weight loss endeavor easier and long lasting. Dr. Zacco explains. “If any weight loss program doesn’t address the underlying psycho-social, spiritual, and physical issue(s) prior to starting the diet, it is destined to eventually fail. “These issues were never addressed with my mom so they all eventually failed her.  No matter how hard she tried, they always failed,” Dr. Zacco recalls. “There is no magic pill. We need to address the underlying metabolic anomaly or psychological impedance to weight loss. If we address metabolic anomalies originating from the gut, brain, endocrine system, then we stack the deck in favor of the patient trying to lose weight,” Dr. Zacco simplifies with a smile. Dr. Zacco recalls, “I had a patient that had a fungal infection in his gastrointestinal tract that caused him cravings for sweets and to over eat. A second patient ate because she had underlying anxiety as she had a progesterone deficiency. I had another patient with a previously unknown infection in his gut, both bacteria and fungi that caused an irresistible and nearly constant craving. He would have such strong cravings, he would eat ice cream before bed and then awake every night about 3:00am to eat more ice cream. The underlying conditions need to be discovered first and then treated properly so that the cravings don’t derail weight loss or even reverse it.” All too frequently we lose weight, just to gain it back plus some when the cravings return and are overwhelmingly powerful. It is NOT that you lack will power and it is NOT simply “calories in/calories out” calculation. You must first treat the underlying cause. After spending 60-90 minutes with you on your first appointment, Dr. Zacco will thoroughly evaluate you using blood tests, saliva tests, specialty...

Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies

Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies

Often Overlooked Vitamin & Mineral Deficiencies Many of us experience symptoms that are a result of vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as; fatigue, slow healing, hypothyroidism, decreased stamina, low libido, cardiac arrhythmia’s, hair loss, skin diseases, and the list goes on and on. Some athletes feel IV nutrient therapy (see Doctor OZ video) allow them a quicker recovery and enhanced stamina.  A nutrient is defined as a substance that provides nourishment for growth and metabolism. Many mistakenly think that people who live in the USA can’t possibly be vitamin or mineral nutrient deficient.  To the contrary, living in the USA is precisely why we are commonly show signs of vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  Living in an industrialized, technologically advanced, wealthy country makes us susceptible to nutrient deficiencies. The vast majority of Americans over consume processed, nutrient poor, calorie rich diets that are relatively low in raw vegetables and fruits this contributes to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  At the same time, most Americans work too hard and endure a daily level of stress and chronic sleep deprivation -a level not experienced in any other country on Earth – EVER. Added to this unnatural lifestyle never endured by any other humans in the history of human kind; farmers don’t rotate crops as they once did, rather they inadequately fertilize/replenish the soil.  Not to mention the explosion of “created plants” that are Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO).  This possibly produces a world where there are more and more food allergies/intolerance’s and autoimmune diseases such as: Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Scleroderma, Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), GI Cancer, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This simmering brew of malfeasance creates a gastrointestinal (GI) tract inflammatory environment that does not absorb nutrients as effectively. Simply taking oral vitamins is many times not enough.  One must fix the gut! That is why I believe that the land of plenty, has become the land of the malnourished.  The vast majority of new patients that we perform a nutritional comprehensive evaluation reveal not one but several nutrient deficiencies in most new patients.  Of course Dr. Zacco’s patient population is skewed because patients who come to Anti Aging & Functional Medicine have usually seen other physicians for significant fatigue and other constitutional symptoms. Interestingly most of the time when we meet patients for the first time, they are on oral nutrient supplementation such as multivitamins, yet their initial tests reveal that they have vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  Dr. Zacco’s philosophy is to correct this quickly and permanently by starting intravenous (IV) nutrient supplementation which delivers nutrients directly to the blood stream instead of having to pass through the damaged gut.  At the same time, Dr. Zacco encourages a healthy and healing diet for a permanently healthy...
